PE Foam: Which Thickness Do You Actually Need? 2mm vs 5mm vs 10mm vs 20mm
Short answer: for wrapping plates, glasses and anything that only needs scratch protection, 2mm PE foam is enough and the cheapest per metre. For furniture, appliances and framed items — the general-purpose jobs — 5mm is the thickness to default to. Once real weight is involved (a heavy appliance sitting on its packing, stacked cartons of hard goods, machine parts), step up to 10mm or 20mm sheets underneath rather than more thin layers around. And when nothing off the roll fits — awkward equipment, repeated shipping of the same fragile product — foam blocks cut into custom inserts beat any amount of wrap. Thickness is not a quality grade; it is a match to the job. Most people buy one thickness for everything and end up either underprotected or overspending.
What PE foam actually is (and why it suits Malaysia)
PE foam — often sold as EPE foam — is expanded polyethylene: a soft, flexible sheet full of sealed air cells. Those closed cells are the whole point. The foam does not absorb water, so in Malaysian humidity it stays dry, does not go limp, and does not wick moisture onto whatever it is touching — which is exactly what old newspaper and cloth wrapping do in a humid store room. It is also non-abrasive, so it will not scuff glass, gloss furniture, appliance panels or freshly painted surfaces even when things vibrate against it for hours in a lorry.
The trade-off is that thin PE foam is a surface protector, not a crumple zone. A 2mm layer stops scratches and rubbing; it does not save a dropped box. Impact protection comes from thickness — which is why choosing the right one matters more than buying “some foam”.

As a rule of thumb, each step up in thickness costs roughly double per square metre. That is the real reason to match thickness to the job: wrapping everything in 10mm “to be safe” costs several times what 2mm does, while protecting a heavy appliance with 2mm costs you the appliance.
2mm — the wrapping and interleaving layer
This is the thickness for contact protection: stopping hard surfaces from touching each other. Slide a 2mm sheet between every plate in a stack, roll each glass in a single wrap, line the inside walls of a carton before packing ceramics or a TV screen against them. It cuts cleanly with scissors, folds around awkward shapes, and adds almost nothing to parcel weight — which matters if you ship by courier, where volumetric weight already punishes bulky padding.
What 2mm does not do is absorb a drop. If the box falls, foam that thin transmits the shock straight through. For anything both fragile and heavy, 2mm is the inner layer, not the whole answer.
Long rolls are the format online sellers should look at: bought at volume, 2mm foam is one of the cheapest ways in the country to make sure two hard items never meet inside a parcel.
5mm — the default for moving house
If you only buy one thickness, buy 5mm. It is thick enough to matter and flexible enough to wrap: dining chairs, table edges, wardrobe doors, the washing machine, a framed wedding photo. Wrap the item, then hold the foam in place with stretch film rather than taping foam directly to furniture — tape on wood or paint can lift the finish when it comes off, and film lets you re-wrap without waste.
5mm is also the renovation trade’s floor protector. Rolled out along the corridor and lift lobby route, it stops trolley wheels, dropped tools and grit from grinding into tiles and parquet — and because it is closed-cell, a spilled drink or wet shoe print sits on top instead of soaking through. A single long roll covers a serious amount of walkway, which is cheap insurance against re-polishing a floor.
10mm and 20mm — when weight enters the picture
Thick sheets work differently: instead of wrapping them around the item, you put the item on them. A 10mm pad under a microwave in its carton, a 20mm base under an amplifier, a layer pad between two stacked cartons of hard goods — the foam sits where the shock arrives, which for anything heavy is almost always the bottom.
The rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the thicker the foam under it, because a heavy item compresses thin foam flat on the first bump and then rides on nothing. This pairs with choosing the right box — a dense, heavy load belongs in a small double-wall carton with thick foam below it, not a big single-wall box with thin foam everywhere.
20mm also cuts into strips for edge and corner protection on furniture and appliances — the corners take the knocks in a lorry, so concentrating your foam budget there beats wrapping entire flat panels.
Blocks — when nothing off the roll fits
Thick foam blocks are for the jobs where wrap fails: equipment with protruding parts, an item that must not shift inside its crate, a product you ship every week and are tired of losing to breakage. Cut the block with a long-bladed knife into a cradle that matches the item’s shape, and it cannot move, so it cannot break. Because PE foam is closed-cell it springs back after each trip, so a cut insert survives repeated use — one properly made insert can outlast hundreds of metres of single-use wrap.
PE foam vs bubble wrap — the honest comparison
The two are complements, not rivals.
Bubble wrap gives you more cushioning depth per ringgit for one-trip jobs. The air pockets are large, so a couple of wraps builds thickness fast — good for void fill and for cushioning light, irregular items on a single journey. Its weaknesses: bubbles pop under sustained pressure and stay popped, and the bubble texture can imprint on soft or freshly painted finishes over a long, hot trip.
PE foam wins on surface safety, repeated use and consistency. It cannot pop, does not imprint, recovers its shape, and a thin layer does the scratch-protection job in far less bulk — which is why it is the standard interleaving material for plates, tiles and glass, and the standard surface wrap for furniture.

- Wrapping dishes, glasses, ornaments? 2mm roll — interleave every piece, line the box.
- Moving furniture and appliances? 5mm roll plus stretch film to hold it on.
- Protecting floors during renovation? 5mm roll along the traffic route, taped to itself, not to the floor.

Is PE foam better than bubble wrap? For scratch protection, repeated use and wrapping delicate surfaces, yes — it is thinner, cannot pop, and will not imprint on finishes. For cheap single-trip cushioning bulk, bubble wrap still earns its place. The best fragile packing typically uses PE foam against the item and bubble wrap or thicker foam around it.
What thickness of PE foam do I need for plates and glasses? 2mm is enough, because the job is stopping hard surfaces touching, not absorbing a drop. Interleave a sheet between every plate, wrap each glass once, and let a rigid carton with a proper base seal handle the impacts.
What is the difference between PE foam and EPE foam? In everyday packaging use they refer to the same material — expanded polyethylene foam. Suppliers in Malaysia use the names interchangeably for the white closed-cell foam sold in rolls, sheets and blocks.
Can I use PE foam for floor protection during renovation? Yes — 5mm is the common choice. Tape the sheets to each other rather than to the floor so the adhesive never touches your tiles or parquet.
Does PE foam absorb water or go mouldy in humid weather? No — the cells are sealed, so it does not take up moisture the way paper, cloth or open-cell sponge does.
