When to Start Packing for a Move in Malaysia: Book Early, Pack Late
Short answer: in Malaysia, start the bookings eight weeks out and the packing three weeks out — not the other way round. The standard “start packing 6–8 weeks before” advice was written for houses with a dry garage or basement where sealed boxes can sit for two months. A KL terrace or condo has neither, and a carton packed in June and left in a non-aircon room until August has quietly lost a third of its strength by moving day. What genuinely needs eight weeks here is the paperwork and the queue: a two-month tenancy notice, a lorry booked before the month-end rush, a condo service-lift slot at both ends, and utility accounts closed so the deposits come back. Do those first. Then pack the whole home in a compressed, back-loaded three weeks, buying boxes to arrive the week you need them rather than the month before.
We supply the boxes for a lot of Klang Valley moves, and the most common mistake we see is not under-packing — it is people ordering carton boxes far too early, filling them with books and Raya crockery in week one, and then wondering why the bottoms sag when the lorry arrives. This guide is the timeline that fits how homes here actually work.
Why the eight-week template does not fit a Malaysian home
Three things break it.
1. There is nowhere dry to stage boxes. The international timelines all begin with “pack the attic, basement and garage first” — spaces that do not exist in a Malaysian terrace, flat or condo. Here, every packed box lives in the rooms you are still living in: the spare bedroom, the store room, under the stairs, along the corridor. Eight weeks of that is not organisation, it is a hallway you cannot walk down.
2. Sealed boxes weaken while they wait. Corrugated board pulls moisture from the air until it matches the room. Peninsular Malaysia sits above 80% relative humidity most of the year, and testing on corrugated boxes shows compression strength falling by roughly 30–40% at that level — more in a store room with no airflow against an exterior wall. The practical consequence for a move: a box packed and stacked in week one is at its weakest in week eight, exactly when it has to survive the lorry. Textiles sealed for two months in that air also come out musty. Pack later, and the boxes are still stiff when they are loaded.
3. There is no off-season. “Pack winter clothes first” is the universal first instruction and it means nothing here. You have to sort by frequency of use instead, and that takes a little more thought — which is what the packing section below is for.
Meanwhile, the things that really are fixed weeks in advance are the ones the same checklists put in the last fortnight.
The booking spine: what actually needs eight weeks
Malaysian tenancy agreements commonly require two months’ written notice to end a tenancy, so for most renters the moving date is fixed eight weeks out whether you like it or not. Use that as the start of the clock. From there, the bookings run in this order:

Most of that table is admin, and admin does not need boxes. Do it early, and the packing weeks are yours.
What to pack first in Malaysia — a frequency-of-use sequence
With no off-season to lean on, sort by how long you can live without something. Start with the “months” pile, end with the “hours” pile. Nothing in the first pile should be packed more than three weeks before the lorry.

Two Malaysian specifics worth building in. Keep the kitchen running to the end: a home here cooks daily, and the mamak-every-night fallback for a week gets expensive fast. And do not pack early into damp rooms — if a box has to wait, it waits in the aircon bedroom, not the store room by the wet kitchen.
Where packed boxes should wait
Because your boxes live in your living space, where you stack them matters as much as when.
- Off the floor. A layer of cardboard pads or a couple of pallet slats between the tiles and the bottom box stops the base drawing moisture from the floor overnight.
- Away from exterior walls, the bathroom wall and the kitchen wall. These are the damp faces of a Malaysian home.
- In the room that gets aircon, if any does. A few hours of cooling a day drops the humidity enough to matter.
- Sealed, but not filmed. Tape the lids closed — two strips of packing tape — so the contents are not open to the air, but do not shrink-wrap a stack of boxes in film: you will seal moisture in, not out.
- Matched sizes, stacked in columns, heaviest at the bottom. Assorted free boxes do not column and end up spread across the floor instead of stacked — the free-boxes guide has the honest cost of that.
The first-night box, Malaysian edition
Pack this last, carry it yourself, open it first. The international lists say “shower curtain and coffee”; ours looks different.
- Kettle, two mugs, a spoon, Milo or coffee, drinking water
- One set of bedding per bed, plus a pillow each
- Toilet paper, hand soap, a bath towel each, basic toiletries
- A standing fan — the aircon may not be serviced or connected on night one
- Mosquito repellent or a coil, and a torch (the meter may not be live yet)
- Phone chargers and a multi-plug extension
- Cleaning basics: a cloth, dish soap, a broom, rubbish bags
- The keys, the tenancy or S&P paperwork, ICs, and a pen
- Prayer items or anything else you use daily without thinking
- The aircon remotes, and the screwdriver for the bed frame
Use a box you will recognise — a small once-used Grade A carton marked with a big cross works better than “the one with tape on it”, which describes every box you own.
How many boxes, and when to order them
Count first, then order to arrive at the start of week 3. Our room-by-room box count gives the full working; as a rough guide a two-bedroom home needs 25–35 boxes and a three-bedroom 40–60, split across two or three sizes so they stack in columns.
For a move — as opposed to shipping — once-used Grade A cartons are the honest recommendation. They arrive already flattened, they have done exactly one trip, and they cost a fraction of new, starting from RM1.20. Order packing tape at roughly one 80 m roll per 20–25 boxes, plus a roll of PE foam or bubble wrap for the crockery and a roll of stretch film for the furniture.
The point of ordering three weeks out instead of eight is not just humidity. It is that you will know the real count by then, because you will have already sorted what you are giving away.
