Courier, Cargo or Lorry? How to Send a Bulky Item in Malaysia
Short answer: a standard courier is built for parcels one person can lift, and most Malaysian services stop at about 30 kg per piece with a cap on the sum of length, width and height between roughly 200 cm and 300 cm. Past that line you have two choices. Cargo services take heavy single pieces across West Malaysia but bill on the higher of real and volumetric weight and take several working days. An on-demand van or lorry bills on the vehicle and the distance, not the item’s size, and suits anything large, awkward or multi-piece inside a city. The quick rule: compact and heavy going interstate, use cargo; big and light, or several items, inside the Klang Valley, book a vehicle; under 30 kg and inside the courier’s size limit, a normal courier in a properly sized carton is still the cheapest. This guide shows how to tell which side of the line your item is on, what each option actually bills you for, and how the packing changes for each, from stretch film and corner protection to the once-used carton from RM1.10 that keeps a 20 kg load inside the courier’s rules.
The three options, side by side
| Standard parcel courier | Cargo service | On-demand van or lorry | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical per-piece limit | About 30 kg, sum of sides about 200–300 cm | Far heavier single pieces (one booking listing shows up to 300 kg) | The vehicle’s capacity (a 10 ft lorry is listed at about 1,000 kg) |
| What you pay for | Higher of actual and volumetric weight | Higher of actual and volumetric weight | The vehicle, the distance, tolls and any helpers |
| Speed | Usually 1–3 working days in Peninsular Malaysia | Several working days; booking listings quote 3–7 | Same day, often within the hour |
| Handling | Sorting belts, cages, drops on every face | Hand trolley, forklift, stacking | Loaded by the driver, by hand |
| Best for | Cartons up to about 25 kg | One heavy compact item going interstate | Furniture, mattresses, several items in one city |
The figures above come from courier rulebooks and booking-platform listings as of October 2026, and they disagree with each other more often than you would hope. Treat them as a guide to which option to quote, not as a promise, and confirm on the provider’s own page the day you book. Our courier size limits guide has the standard-service limits courier by courier.
Step 1: measure it the way the courier will
Most rejected bookings are about size, not weight. Measure the item, or the box it will travel in, at its longest, widest and tallest points including handles, legs and any padding you plan to add. Then work out two numbers.
The sum of sides. Length plus width plus height. A box of 60 × 50 × 50 cm sums to 160 cm and clears every standard service. A flat-pack wardrobe carton of 200 × 60 × 15 cm sums to 275 cm and fails some services on its length alone before the sum is even checked.
The volumetric weight. Length × width × height in centimetres, divided by the divisor. Parcel couriers usually use 5000; the cargo listings we checked use 6000. Whichever is higher, the real weight or the volumetric one, is what you pay for. A 45 × 30 × 30 cm carton of books is about 8 kg by volume at 5000 and closer to 15 kg on the scale, so you pay for the books. A two-seater sofa at 150 × 85 × 80 cm is 170 kg by volume at 6000, while it weighs perhaps a quarter of that, so you pay for the air. Our volumetric weight guide walks through the maths for everyday parcels.
That one calculation settles most decisions. If the volumetric weight is far above the real weight, the item is big and light, and a vehicle that charges for the trip rather than the size is usually the better deal.
Step 2: pick the option
Use a normal courier when the item packs into a carton under about 25 kg (leaving room under the 30 kg cap for the box, the padding and the courier’s scale) and inside the size limit. Splitting is often the answer here: a 50 kg load of books or kitchenware becomes three cartons of around 15 kg, each cheaper to send and far less likely to burst than one overloaded box. Our guide to how heavy a moving box should be explains why the sweet spot sits well below the limit.
Use a cargo service when you have one heavy, reasonably compact item going a long way, such as a machine, a boxed appliance, a stack of tiles or a crate of stock from Selangor to Penang or Johor. Cargo services generally cover West Malaysia only, so Sabah and Sarawak need sea or air freight instead. Ask whether the price includes doorstep delivery or only collection at a hub, and whether anyone will help lift at the other end.
Book a van or lorry when the item is big and light, awkward in shape, or one of several items, and especially when both addresses are inside the same city. Platforms like Lalamove and movers like TheLorry list vehicles from cars and vans up to 10 ft and larger lorries. A sofa, a mattress, a fridge, a bed frame and a few cartons go in one trip for one price, loaded straight from your door to the next, with no sorting hub in between. For a whole household, our lorry size guide helps you choose between a van, a 1-tonne and a 3-tonne.
Use a mover or a dedicated interstate lorry when you have a houseful going between states. That is a move, not a shipment, and our interstate move guide covers it.
Step 3: pack for the way it will be handled
The same sofa needs different packing depending on who carries it.
For a parcel courier
Every face of the parcel will be dropped on, stood on and stacked under something heavier. Use a carton the item nearly fills, double wall above about 15 kg, with no empty space for the contents to shift into. Seal it with an H-pattern of 48 mm packing tape on top and bottom, and put the label on the largest flat face. Once-used Grade A cartons are a good honest fit here: they have already carried one load without damage, they cost about half the price of new, and a courier treats them exactly the same as a new box.
For a cargo service
Cargo is moved by trolley and forklift and stacked, so think like a pallet.
- A flat, rigid base. Anything with legs or an uneven bottom should sit on a sheet of corrugated layer pad or a board, so it can be slid and stacked without the legs taking the weight.
- Corners protected. Straps and forklift tines find corners first. Fold layer pad into corner guards, or use edge protectors; our edge protectors and layer pads guide shows how.
- Wrapped tight in stretch film. Several turns of stretch film hold padding, loose parts and doors in place and keep the rain off at the hub. Our stretch film guide covers thickness and how many turns.
- Marked clearly. This-way-up arrows on two sides, the delivery address and a phone number on the item itself, not only on a sticker that can tear off.
For an on-demand van or lorry
The driver loads by hand and drives across town, so the risks are doors swinging open, surfaces rubbing on the lorry floor and rain during loading.
- Empty drawers, then tape them shut with low-tack tape or hold them with stretch film rather than packing tape on the finish.
- Wrap wooden and painted surfaces in a layer of bubble wrap or PE foam first, then stretch film over it, so the film never sits straight on the finish in the afternoon heat.
- Remove legs where you can, bag the screws and tape the bag to the underside.
- Cover mattresses and fabric sofas fully in plastic; the wet-season afternoon storm does not wait for the loading to finish.
Our furniture wrapping guide goes piece by piece.

FAQ
What is the heaviest parcel a normal courier in Malaysia will take? Most standard parcel services cap a single piece at about 30 kg, with a limit on the sum of length, width and height that sits between roughly 200 cm and 300 cm depending on the courier. A few services go to 50 kg. Above that, or for anything longer than about 1.5 to 2 metres, you are into cargo services or a van or lorry. Limits change, so check the courier’s own page on the day you book.
Is it cheaper to send furniture by cargo courier or by Lalamove-style lorry? It depends on distance and how much air the item carries. Cargo services bill on the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so a light but large item like a sofa or a mattress can bill at well over 100 kg. An on-demand van or lorry bills on the vehicle and the distance, not the size of the item, so inside the Klang Valley it is usually the simpler and often the cheaper choice for one large item. For a single heavy, compact piece going interstate, cargo usually wins. Get both quotes for the same item before deciding.
How do I work out the volumetric weight of a big item? Multiply length, width and height in centimetres and divide by the courier’s divisor, usually 5000 for parcel services and 6000 on the cargo listings we checked. A two-seater sofa measuring 150 x 85 x 80 cm comes to 1,020,000, which is 204 kg at 5000 and 170 kg at 6000. That is why large soft items rarely make sense through a parcel courier at all.
Do I need to pack an item differently for cargo than for a normal courier? Yes. A parcel courier puts every piece on a sorting belt and in a cage, so it must survive drops and stacking on every face. Cargo is moved by hand trolley or forklift and stacked, so it needs a flat strong base, corners that can take a strap, stretch film to hold it together and a clear this-way-up. An on-demand lorry is loaded by the driver by hand, so the priority is holding drawers and doors shut and keeping the surfaces from rubbing on the lorry floor.
Can I send a mattress by courier? Not usually through a standard parcel service, because even rolled it tends to exceed the length or dimension limit and bills at a large volumetric weight. A vacuum-rolled mattress in its original box sometimes fits a cargo service. An unrolled mattress is a van or lorry job, wrapped in a plastic cover or stretch film against rain and dust.
